Swimming with the SharksSince 2015, the television series about entrepreneurs pitching ideas to venture capitalists (aka the sharks) has hit a bit closer to home at Bernardsville Middle School.

For the past nine years, students in Luke LaChac’s 7th grade World History II classes have taken part in LaChark Tank. It was an idea he expanded upon after student teaching. “The application of the well-known show helps bridge student interest from the show to the topic we are learning. It also allows students to develop career ready practices, without them feeling like it is taxing or difficult,” said LaChac.

In class, students studied inventions from three Chinese dynasties spanning 618-1368, which include the Song, Tang, and Yuan. Similar to entrepreneurs “in the tank,” the students’ experiences involved problems, inventions, and solutions. Using valid and reliable research strategies, the 7th graders analyzed different challenges that the dynasties faced, and how inventions such as woodblock printing, vaccines, the magnetic compass, and gunpowder impacted life. Following direct classroom lessons, they had time to work on their various project elements, writing scripts, creating presentations, and devising props.

Although they worked individually, there were opportunities to gather in cooperative learning groups. The project culminated in presentations that were unique and fun, and that enhanced their communication skills. Part of the student excitement was not only in presenting, but also in being a “shark.” In this simulation, they all took turns as investors on the panel; with an allotment of money, they were able to add to their portfolios by making investments after hearing their peers’ pitches.

“When I see former students around town, they always ask if I am still doing LaChark Tank. I think this project not only leaves a lasting impression, but also provides students with tools that they can use in their academic and professional careers,” shared LaChac. Year after year the students are enthusiastic about it. While the majority have seen the show, what generates more excitement is word of mouth from older siblings, students, and friends who let younger ones know that they too will get to take a whirl in LaChark Tank. What an engaging way to learn about World History and different cultures!

Social Studies Supervisor Michael Catelli commented, “It is great to see students so energized about making historical arguments with a fun twist. I'm always impressed by the passion, creativity, and thoughtfulness they bring to their work.”
